ReplyDeleteHey Amanda,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! The online method of education is ultra valuable by the points that you made. One reason that I believe that students remain "active and motivated" (as you put it) is because they are responsible for their learning. Kim and Frick (2011) also mention that the motivation increases with relevance. The students must see how it relates to their lives. The teacher is no longer standing in front of the classroom telling them information. The student must now find and process the information for the class.

I really enjoyed this post and agree that professional development is important to best practices. As you mentioned professional development does not directly affect distances learners but it does affect them. Instructors and teachers need to know what skills are need and available when teaching distance learners. Professional development is not just a one-time thing. It is something that educators need to continue to attend so they may grow as educators. This is especially important to distance educators, because technology is constantly changing and evolving. The best professional development is ongoing, experiential, collaborative, and connected to and derived from working with student and understanding their needs from the course (Edutopia Team, 2008). Once again this was a great post and finish strong.
